For 25 years my ceramics work has been inspired by the ocean. Living near the ocean environment with its beauty, colour and symmetry, has creatively influenced my work. The ocean's many features have in various ways been incorporated into my designs.
During my working life, I have worked full time as a Lecturer at TAFE (WA) in Early Childhood Studies for twelve years, teaching mainly subjects relating to creative play for children. I later worked as an Early Childhood teacher in Primary Schools for thirteen years. Throughout this time I also encouraged children to use their creativity in many mediums including modelling in clay. I was also a part time Potter, longing for the days when I could be a full time potter.
I am now a full time Ceramic Potter and love the freedom to explore this wonderful artistic medium. I also enjoy running small, children’s vacation classes in my studio.
I make functional and sculptural ceramics in Porcelain and Stoneware. I like to decorate by original hand-painted designs with the use of Under-glaze colours, carving, piercing, or simply allowing the form to be the main focus.
I also love to fire Raku pieces with fellow members of the Perth Studio Potters. Raku firing can often produce the wonderful crackle glaze decoration which gives the piece an antique quality. I try to add a unique decorative touch to my pottery.
I hope to entice the viewers to want to touch and explore my wheel or hand-made pieces. Ideally I hope customers will enjoy the aesthetic and practical value of the pottery.
