What is the In Between?
These three artist’s works all explore the ambiguous and transitional
Western Australian Surrealist painter Shirley Clancy’s magical works, invite you to interpret the indeterminate questions of the uncertain moments IN BETWEEN. From light to dark, dusk till dawn, being in the movement from one time to another. Shirley Clancy explores the journey in-between. Open to interpretation, her fine use of symbolism only hints at the direction of the story and leads the viewer to further question the scenario before them. Shirley opens to us a world of intrigue and depth into which we happily dive to attempt to encounter or decipher more of her wonderful awareness and story- as she appreciates the ambiguity of life.
A ceramicist previously based in South Australia, Maria Chatzinikolaki is now living back in her home country of Greece.
In these new works , Maria explores life, death and everything IN- BETWEEN,
believing:-“ before or after can be real only up to a certain subconscious level and according to our individual ability to interpret and understand."
Through her beautiful forms, Maria explores history and ancient symbols of life and death.
Salli Coppin’s (local Margaret River artist) second body of work of raw metal castings and raw gems, explores the age old symbol of a ring as an ancient symbol of life and its significant moments and meanings- birth, marriage, death, wealth and status, universal mystery and magic.
The pure symbol of the circle (a ring) signifies the circle of life itself and the ever evolving meaning it has for each and every one of us.
We began as dust and to dust we return. The elements in each of these pieces connect us to their raw beginnings- each element now in a state of IN-BETWEEN:- space/dust/earth/wearable jewellery or a mineral form- these pieces explore the juxtapositions in life, the huge expanse of our existence and the IN-BETWEEN.
