Art Collecting and emerging artists.
If you love art then there is no better time to start a collection than now.
Some say a collection should have a common theme and link in some sense and this can be different things to different people.
Artworks in a collection can relate in many ways:
Place, Medium, Colour, Style, Size, Subject; but as you will be living with your collection make sure you love it!
If you are starting out then budget will be a factor and there is no better place to start than with emerging artists.
By buying emerging artists you are supporting an artist on their journey and may possibly just be buying an early work of a future star!
How to find an emerging artist.
You can find art in many places these days and especially online but as Vogue blog point out,
there is no better way than seeing it in the real! Commercial galleries are open daily and across the year so are easy access on most days of the week.
Buying through a commercial gallery will also give your artwork the credibility it deserves and a record of your purchase.
A gallery supports and promotes particular artists and dedicated artists sure to last!
The artists shown through a gallery are chosen specifically for the talent and dedication, a level of execution and standard of work. By buying through a gallery, you can be sure there will be a record of the artist in the future as well as a past record of price and history of works, a record of the collections the artist works belongs to and the artists’ achievements and awards. Galleries also offer regular exhibitions to the artists they support which continually builds an artist’s profile and value of their work.
Galleries are also very informed on values of works in general (see our blog on ‘The Gallery Business’)
You can start as low as around $300 for a limited edition print by a collectable print artist
and many galleries have a layby or payment plan option to assist buyers.
Collecting is fun!
You take yourself out to exhibition openings and galleries and meet artists, gallerists and other art lovers whilst increasing your arts knowledge. You will see a diversity of works including photographs and prints -even jewellery, did you know Australian contemporary jewellers are noted on a world level as being quite something!
In Summary, your collection can be anything! Build your knowledge and you will gain confidence. If you don’t have a large budget for a blue chip artwork then take a risk, buy an emerging artist, have fun and support the next Big Name!
